Day starts on bad note for drivers in wreck on Interstate 17 in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A two-vehicle wreck slowed traffic on a Phoenix freeway Thursday morning, but no one was seriously injured, highway authorities said.

The accident on Interstate 17 South near Deer Valley Road closed off all but the HOV lane initially a little after 6 a.m. Traffic was able to get around the damaged trucks, as well as fire trucks and other first responder vehicles on the freeway.

With the southbound ramp closed, backup began around Happy Valley Road.

Trooper Kameron Lee of the Arizona Department of Public Safety said two pickup trucks collided and that one was pulling a trailer. One of the drivers suffered minor injuries.

All lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.

An earlier multivehicle wreck on the freeway closer to downtown Phoenix shut down that stretch of road for over two hours, starting around 4 a.m.

Four vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, smashed together near the Thomas Road exit, and one rolled over in the southbound lanes, but no serious injuries were reported, Lee said.

The freeway had been closed at Indian School Road for cleanup and investigation.
