Mesa officer recognized for carrying disabled, struggling resident to work

PHOENIX — A Mesa police officer is being recognized for his good deed after he carried a disabled woman to work after he noticed her struggling to walk.
Det. Steve Berry, a spokesman for the Mesa Police Department, said Officer Brandon Lavin was working the marathon route during the Mesa-Phoenix marathon Feb. 24 when he noticed Tavia Warner.
Warner, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, had to walk a mile to work because road closures that were in place because of the marathon. forcing detours. It was a struggle for her.
“I kept falling,” Warner said in a recording of the thank-you call. “Do you know what he did? He threw me over his shoulder and walked me to work. Wow. … My gratitude is unbelievable. Thank you so much.”
The two met up again Tuesday morning at the Mesa police station during an official acknowledgment of his efforts.
“This is a great example of an officer doing is necessary to solve a problem for a community member,” Berry said.
Berry said the department first was made aware of the moment after Warner left a voicemail to try to find out who her good Samaritan was and give him a face-to-face thanks.
