PHOENIX — Arizona was one of the top states in the nation when it comes to pedestrian deaths, according to a recent study from the Governors Highway Safety Association.

The state was ranked fifth-highest in the nation for the most pedestrian fatalities in the first six months of 2017.

Arizona had 113 pedestrian deaths from January to June of 2017, an increase from 101 during the same time period in 2016.

Arizona only fell behind California, Florida, Texas and New York in terms of total pedestrian deaths during that time period.

All six states accounted for 43 percent of all pedestrian deaths during the first six months of 2017, but the same states represent about 30 percent of the population, according to the 2017 Census.

However, that same study found that Arizona has the highest rate of pedestrian deaths in the nation, with a rate of 1.61 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents.

Hawaii fell at the opposite end of the spectrum, with a rate of 0.07 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents.

Only 12 states in the U.S. had fewer than ten pedestrian deaths during the first six months of 2017: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wyoming.

Nationwide, the number of pedestrians killed in motor vehicle crashes decreased by less than one half of a percent from the first six months of 2016 to the first six months of 2017, the report found.
