PHOENIX — Buying a good burger can mean money for a Phoenix race fighting children’s cancer.

Habit Burger will donate 20 percent of Wednesday’s sales to Run To Fight Children’s Cancer, hosted by the Phoenix area’s Children’s Cancer Network.

The eighth annual run was scheduled for March 10 at Grand Canyon University near 35th Avenue and Camelback Road.

Customers who want to donate must download and present a flyer at participating locations.

“It’s a great cause for the kids, you know, who are true fighters,” Chepe Valdez, district manager for the burger chain’s Arizona stores, said.

“I’ve been blessed to work with several … people that have cancer, or are in the process of fighting it. Or, have already fought it.”

“The great part about (the network) is 86 percent of the money that they bring in goes directly back to families,” she said.

“Not a lot of nonprofits can say that.”

The run is the Valley’s largest race dedicated to the disease in children.

The proceeds and donations support families and children. This year’s event features a 10K run and a 5K run/walk. There will also be a quarter-mile survivors’ walk.

Proceeds will be used for lifesaving research and treatments, along with financial and other support services provided by Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Children’s Cancer Network.

Donations without a burger purchase can be made online.
