PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division will soon offer an online test for teenagers pursuing a driver’s permit.

Online practice tests were available at the ADOT website for a number of years, but the department recently decided offer the test online as well.

Teens will be able to take the written driver’s test online beginning March 5.

“Having the ‘Permit Test @ Home’ is a modern and convenient way for MVD to serve our customers,” department spokeswoman Jennifer Browser-Richards said in a press release.

Parents will be required to set up a free account on ServiceArizona.com, register their teen for the test and certify that they will give the exam fairly.

A road skills test will still be required in order for permit holders to become licensed drivers.

“Learning to drive is a rite of passage for many teens and the ‘Permit Test @ Home’ makes the process a bit easier,” Browser-Richards said.

“Rather than requiring teens and their parents to come to an MVD office to pick up the manual and then return for the knowledge test, MVD is making everything available digitally.”

Teens still must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to obtain the permit.

They have three attempts within 12 months to pass the test.
