Voting for Dr. Hiral Tipirneni? Here’s how to pronounce her name

PHOENIX — Dr. Hiral Tipirneni, a U.S. Congressional candidate for Phoenix, released a video that covered something very important to her: how to pronounce her name.

The video, which looked like it was recorded at a party, went around and asked people of all ages how they would pronounce “Hiral.”

There were a number of different answers and confused looks before Tipirneni’s daughter stepped in and answered with the correct pronunciation.

It’s pronounced “he-rul.”

“And I should know because she’s my mom,” her daughter said.

The video cut to a sit-down shot of Tipirneni.

“I may have a funny name, but I’m very serious about making sure that every Arizonan has access to quality, affordable healthcare,” she said.

And if you weren’t sure how to pronounce her last name, her son demonstrated that at the end as well.

Tipirneni is the Democratic candidate running for the U.S. House of Representatives against Republican candidate Debbie Lesko. The two candidates are running to replace former U.S. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) who resigned in December.

Tipirneni spent more than 20 years in Phoenix as an emergency room physician and cancer research advocate.

More recently, she was on the board of directors for the Maricopa Health Foundation, a group in support of a public health care delivery system for the county.

The special general election was scheduled for April 24.
