Affordable housing complex for veterans opens in Tempe

PHOENIX – Arizona’s first affordable housing complex for veterans and their families has officially opened in Tempe.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday for the grand opening of Valor on Eighth Apartment Homes, an affordable complex designated for veteran families with children.
According to a release, the complex is a 50-unit mixed-income rental community with five live-work units on the ground floor and 45 multi-family units.
Vice Mayor Robin Arredondo-Savage and former Vice Mayor Corey Woods developed the idea for the complex in a partnership with the Veterans Commission.
Gorman & Company, Inc. was the lead developer of the project, with assistance from the City of Tempe, the Affordable Rental Movement of Save the Family, the Arizona Department of Housing and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“There is community space within the building which will allow for indoor recreation room for social and financial services, counseling and career development for residents,” Brian Swanton, the CEO for Gorman & Company said.
“The City of Tempe approved the contribution of the land to develop the first community exclusive to helping homeless veterans and their families.”
Valor on Eighth is located near the intersection of Eighth Street and Rural Road near the campus of Arizona State in Tempe.
