PHOENIX — Searching for barbecue and fried chicken just got a little bit easier as Rhema Soul Cuisine is making the move from Queen Creek to Phoenix.
Three years ago, the restaurant opened in Queen Creek and quickly expanded after finding success. Now, after years of establishing themselves in tiny little Queen Creek, Ron and Via Childs are making the move to the big city.
“This for us, it’s like making it to the Super Bowl,” Ron said.
The new location, found on the corner of Jefferson Street and 12th Street, features an indoor smoker and is just a few blocks away from Chase Field. The restaurant plans to open on April 4, right around when the Diamondbacks’ season begins.
Behind the restaurant is the Phoenix Fire Department station and the Childs are hoping that the firefighters become regular customers.
They plan on opening Rhema Soul for lunch to appeal to nearby businesses, something they didn’t do in Queen Creek.
Another difference between the Queen Creek location and in Phoenix is that they will now be selling beer.
You might not think of a barbecue restaurant as a place that serves vegan dishes but that is what Rhema Soul is planning to try. They have been working with Impossible Burger, a company that produces plant-based meat, and decided to add two vegan dishes to its menu.
“We’re not going to do dishes, we’re not having waitresses and waiters,” Ron said. “Our reputation has grown for us being more intimate and personal so we are going to try and configure that where we still have that intimacy, where I come out and speak to everybody.”
