PHOENIX — A man was shot and killed by an officer in a parking garage at Scottsdale Fashion Square on Sunday night, the Scottsdale Police Department said.
Officers were first made aware of the situation around 5 p.m., when an officer working as security at Scottsdale Fashion Square was advised by loss prevention of a man “acting erratic” in a store.
The man was later identified as 51-year-old Abel L. Martinez.
That officer — who has not yet identified — came in contact with the man on the third level of the brown parking garage.
The officer then ordered Martinez to stop. The man then turned toward the officer with a semi-automatic handgun in his hand and began to raise it toward the officer.
The officer then shot Martinez. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martinez was first described as a Hispanic male with an “extensive criminal history dating back to the 1980s.”
The department said his record included arrests and convictions for drug offences, theft and robbery. He also had an arrest warrant for drug offenses and was a prohibited possessor.
The officer was described as a 12-year veteran. He is currently on paid administrative leave, the department said.
The department is currently investigating the shooting.
