Flake wouldn’t impeach Trump, but says his actions are bad for US

Feb 16, 2018, 9:32 AM | Updated: 7:25 pm

PHOENIX — Sen. Jeff Flake may be highly critical of President Donald Trump and believes his words damage the country’s reputation, but that doesn’t mean he thinks the man should be impeached.

“I’m not one of those who run around calling for our president to be impeached,” Flake said Friday in an interview on CNBC.

“He’s done nothing in my view that would warrant that. But I do think that the behavior he sometimes exhibits, and some of the policies that he has adopted, aren’t good for our national security.”

The Arizona Republican announced his retirement in October, effective next year when his term ends.

The 55-year-old cited, “Reckless, outrageous, and undignified behavior … from the top of our government” as dangerous, undermined the country’s values, and acceptance would cause him “to compromise far too many principles.”

But Flake still votes for Trump’s agenda most of the time and has said more than once that Trump shouldn’t be impeached.

In October, he said impeachment wasn’t justified, and last month said last month he said he’d vote no, if such a bill reached the Senate.

“Some people think if you disapprove of some of the president’s actions or his behavior then you ought to vote against everything he supports,” he said.

Flake also said that while Russia interfered with the 2016 presidential election, he didn’t believe the president was compromised or that there was collusion.

“I don’t think that the campaign colluded in some meaningful way. I don’t think that they were organized enough, or competent enough as a campaign to do that.” he said.
