PHOENIX — A Phoenix-based company will be tasked with helping a major airline make its planes safer.
United Airlines has selected Honeywell to outfit its fleet of more than 150 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes with a new type of technology that will improve the cockpits on planes.
The package will include a new weather-radar system that is designed to cut back on turbulence-related incidents and make flights safer for passengers.
The weather-radar system, according to the company, will “increase pilots’ awareness of surroundings, helping to ensure they use the correct runways and taxiways and providing passengers with a smoother experience and greatly reducing the possibility of injury.”
The company said this system has already reduced turbulence-related incidents in half.
“This technology is especially important for airlines such as United that fly many routes through diverse weather patterns,” said Honeywell President Carl Esposito in a statement. “It allows them to be prepared for anything and stay operational, so passengers reach their destinations as quickly and safely as possible.”
John Ashton with Honeywell said most of the new flight deck package is being designed and developed right here in the Valley.
Ashton said he hopes this will lead to other airlines using their technology, which in turn would provide an even bigger boost to the state’s economy.
