PHOENIX — A smartphone app being tested at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and others would send alerts to travelers letting them know wait times at security checkpoints.
Bloomberg reported that the TripIt app uses a form of radar to check the line length and lets fliers know wait times about three hours before they are scheduled to depart.
“The simple knowledge of how long it will take them to get through security is reducing traveler anxiety and increasing satisfaction for one of the most stressful stages of modern-day travel,” the analytics company behind the app, Iinside, said in a statement to the outlet.
The app will also give real-time line updates, show the nearest security checkpoint and let fliers see which line is the shortest.
The app will combine wait-time data and airport traffic information to let users know when they should get out the door to make a flight on time.
However, Sky Harbor — and other airports — already post wait times. Spokeswoman Heather Lissner said the Phoenix airport has done so since September 2016.
Security wait times are also broadcast on screens around the airport and on at PHX Sky Train stations.
Other services provided by the Transportation Security Administration, such as the TSA Precheck program, offer shorter wait times for fliers.
