Toys R Us closing 182 stores in US, 6 in Arizona

PHOENIX — Struggling retailer Toys R Us announced Wednesday it was closing more than 180 stores, including four in metro Phoenix, starting as soon as next month.
In a memo to customers, company Chairman Dave Brandon wrote the decision was part of the financial restructuring brought on by last fall’s bankruptcy filing.
Hobbled by $5 billion in debt, the company that once dominated toy sales in the U.S. will shut down 182 sites.
The store closings will begin in February and the majority of the targeted locations will go dark by mid-April. At some other locations, the retailer planned to combine its Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.
The Arizona stores on the list:
- Mesa: U.S. 60 and Signal Butte Road
- Paradise Valley: 12801 North Tatum Blvd.
- Scottsdale: 9139 Indian Bend Road
- Scottsdale: 7000 E. Mayo Blvd.
- Tucson: 4619 N. Oracle Road
- Yuma: 801 W. 32nd St.
Toys R Us operates about 900 stores in America.
Brandon admitted in the memo that the New Jersey-based company made some missteps during the critical holiday shopping season.
“As the leader of this company, I want you to know that we can and will address the gaps in the experience that you may have had when shopping this holiday,” Brandon said.
The company posted a complete list of the stores going dark.
