PHOENIX — The Pima Canyon Trailhead, one of South Mountain Regional Park’s most popular attractions, will be reopen this week after months of renovations.

The trail is scheduled to open on Saturday, according to the East Valley Tribune.

The renovation, which began in early August, created additional parking space and ramadas and expanded and improved the restroom and drinking facilities. The parking expansion added 44 stalls, which will create improved access to the trail.

The trailhead, located near 48th Street and Guadalupe, Road, is one of the more popular hiking trails because of the convenient location.

The new drinking installations will include new water lines for water bottle filling stations.

The renovation also re-vegetated certain parts of the trail, added solar-powered safety lighting and installed fencing to offset any future damage to the preserve by people or wildlife.

Mike Francis, parks supervisor for the South Mountain Park and the Rio Salado Habitat talked to the Tribune about the commentary he received from citizens about the renovations.

“It had an input process. People made it their own,” he said. “It’s had a lot of time to be refined. In the long term, it’s a better project.”

The Pima Canyon Trailhead takes hikers to a handful of trails, including the Desert Classic Trail, the longest at 9 miles.
