Brutal winter in northeast US freezes part of Atlantic Ocean

Jan 16, 2018, 2:49 PM

This winter has been an interesting one, to say the least.

While Arizona has largely escaped any type of brutal winter weather, only receiving some rain and snow this month, the same cannot be said for other parts of the country.

In the northeastern part of the country, however, temperatures have regularly been in the negative and have stayed there for weeks at a time.

But the cold temperatures have brought an unexpected change: Part of the Atlantic Ocean was frozen over in a YouTube video that soon went viral.

The video, posted by user Ryan Canty, showed a group of three people exploring the frozen ocean off the coast of North Falmouth, Massachusetts.

“It’s about 20 below,” said a man who was filming the phenomenon. “Looks like Antarctica right now.”

“Who wants to go swimming?”

The video has since been viewed more than 3.3 million times since it was posted on Jan. 7.

But if you are looking for a different perspective of the ocean, the same user posted a different video where he sent a drone up in the air to capture the view.

According to Boston.com, that amount of ice is “certainly unusual,” but officials are advising people to not climb on top of the ice since it can be unstable, especially as temperatures start to warm up.
