PHOENIX — A suspect has been seriously wounded after being involved in a shooting with a Phoenix Police Department officer.

According to Sgt. Jonathan Howard with the department, the shooting occurred before noon on Wednesday and took place in the area of 32nd Street and Southern Avenue in Phoenix.

Howard said the incident started with a collision near 48th Street and Broadway Road around 11:30 a.m. One of the vehicles involved was a stolen box truck.

The suspect who was driving the stolen box truck then caused a second collision as he was fleeing the scene from the first, Howard said.

Both of the victims in the crashes then followed the suspect. While the suspect was fleeing the scene from both accidents, he ran a red light and caused a third collision, Howard said.

That collision caused the truck to turn on its side. The suspect then got out of the vehicle and allegedly attempted to carjack a second vehicle, but was unsuccessful. He then allegedly pulled a gun on officers, but one officer shot and injured the suspect.

The suspect is expected to survive his injuries, Howard said. One of the drivers involved in the hit-and-run was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. No officers were injured.

Howard said Southern Avenue will be closed between 24th and 32nd streets for about five hours as police continue their investigation.
