PHOENIX — On Tuesday, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced he would run for U.S. Senate, the latest move in a long career of public service.

Arpaio, 85, was ousted from office for the first time in 24 years in November when he was defeated by Democrat Paul Penzone in the general election.

At that time, he was the longest-serving sheriff in Maricopa County history.

Some thought that may be the end of Arpaio’s career, especially given there was an outstanding civil lawsuit against him.

The former lawman was eventually convicted of criminal contempt of court, a misdemeanor, but he was pardoned by President Donald Trump before the court had a chance to sentence him.

During his career, Arpaio was a divisive figure in both the state of Arizona and nationally. He declared himself the “toughest sheriff in America” and became famous — or infamous, depending on your views — for making inmates wear pink underwear.

He really stepped into the national spotlight as the debate raged on illegal immigration. During his time in office, he was known for his firm stance against illegal immigrants and he became a champion for people who agreed with him.

Take a look at Arpaio’s career so far in the graphic below.
