PHOENIX — City of Glendale officials warned residents Monday to keep an eye out for people posing as water department workers to try to get inside homes.
In a press release, the city said it had received at least three reports of people knocking on doors between Nov. 12 and Nov. 30. The scammers would say they worked for the city and needed to get inside to check the water or install filters.
“Under no circumstances would anyone from Glendale’s Water Services department ever check water by knocking on a homeowner’s door asking to come inside,” the department’s director, Craig Johnson, said in the release.
The potential scams happened near 51st and Northern avenues, 67th and Glendale avenues and Grand Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
The scam has involved at least three people so far: A white man, a black man and a black woman. They were carrying clipboards.
The city said its water department employees wear blue shirts and hats with city logos and carry identification, which residents can ask to see. They also drive city vehicles.
Though employees do respond to homeowner calls, they will never conduct random checks. Water is checked outside the home.
The city was unaware of anyone who fell victim to the scam.
