PHOENIX — Two years after shutting down, the Downtown Deli reopened Monday as a tavern under new ownership, selling comfort food, classic cocktails and 50-cent coffee.
The group behind Phoenix hot spots the Vig, Crescent Ballroom and the Van Buren — Genuine Concepts — bought the space on Central Avenue near Monroe Street. After hammering out details, owners Tucker Woodbury and Jim Riley have remade the menu, extended hours and topped it off with servings of alcoholic beverages.
The Phoenix-area restaurant news blog Pulling Corks and Forks reported that Woodbury said, “The Downtown Deli Tavern will be equal parts food and bar.”
The bar and night hours will be the biggest change at the site. The restaurant’s night hours will include 2 a.m. closing time on Friday and Saturday. During the week the place will be open until at least 11 p.m.
“We wanted to tap into the amazing breweries in Arizona, and offer only local beer on draft. We took six classic cocktail’s and updated them with a modern twist. beverage director Chris Hardin told Arizona Foodie.
All the beers on draft are brewed in Arizona.
The old restaurant served breakfast and lunch and had been in business for nearly 50 years. It shut down in late May.
Menu items include meatloaf, fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, French toast with fried bananas, ice cream, bourbon maple syrup, pecans and bacon.
