Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office receives $200K in traffic grants

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $200,000 in grants on Monday to fund a variety of traffic enforcement programs.
In a press release, the agency said the lion’s share of the money from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety would go toward holiday DUI task forces.
More than $113,000 will be spent on equipment and training to identify drivers under the influence in addition to overtime pay for those on the task force. Some of the money will be used to educate kids about alcohol.
About $36,000 will help pay for investigations into fatal or serious accidents.
Another $35,000 will be used to install speed detection equipment in both marked and unmarked cars, including two light detection and ranging devices that can be used in neighborhoods and construction zones.
The remaining $20,000 will be spent on tracking down people who have warrants out for driving while impaired.
“The population growth in Maricopa County requires frequent, visible and direct traffic enforcement,” Alberto Gutier, the office’s director, said in the release. “We’re committed to helping MCSO keep our roadways safer.”
