Westbound US 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue will close this week for study

PHOENIX — Drivers in Tempe planning to use a U.S. 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue may need to change their plans Wednesday through Saturday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced the closure of the U.S. 60 west on-ramp at Mill Avenue from Wednesday at 1 a.m. to Saturday at 11 p.m.

Engineers plan to gather information regarding crashes and traffic flow that has plagued the area.

Often during weekday rush hours, drivers entering from the Mill Avenue on-ramp clog traffic lanes by working their way to the left lane which directs traffic to the eastbound Interstate 10.

A recent evaluation indicated that most crashes have been minor rear-end collisions in the left lanes as vehicles try to merge drastically slowing down or even stopping traffic.

Suggested alternate routes for drivers include the on-ramp at Rural Road Drivers headed for the eastbound I-10 toward Ahwatukee or Tucson may also want to detour to Baseline Road south of Arizona Mills.

Road closures on major freeways such as the I-10 and Interstate 17 for construction have been commonplace in the past few months in an effort to improve safety and quality of roads.

Last fall, flexible delineator posts were installed on the far left HOV lane to discourage unsafe lane changes near Mill Avenue.

Staff from ADOT will be working together with officials from the city of Tempe to oversee the study. City officials hoped that this closure will produce more information on how to improve safe driving.
