PHOENIX — Scottsdale has reportedly turned to the public to come up with a new design for the city’s flag.
The Scottsdale Independent reported the city will accept design concepts through Oct. 27 to replace the current flag, which is the city’s seal over a white background.
Submissions can be turned in at any Scottsdale public library or sent in online.
The Neighborhood Advisory Commission will take a look at the designs and will offer up the finalists to the city council for a vote. Should a new design be chosen, it will be revealed early next year.
The decision to change the flag was made after a high school student pointed out that the current flag did not meet the design standards of the North American Vexillological Association, aka the flag experts of the United States and Canada.
The city said it wants the new flag design to be simple, use meaningful symbols, have no letters or seals and to be distinctive.
The city said colors used on the flag should reflect the city or convey some sort of emotion that was connected to Scottsdale.
The city gave a few example symbols that included a saguaro cactus, a cowboy hat and a person riding a horse.
