PHOENIX — Officials with the Flagstaff Police Department said they have begun classifying the case of a missing elementary school teacher from Glendale as a homicide.

Cathryn Gorospe, a 44-year-old teacher at Arrowhead Elementary, was first reported missing on Oct. 8, after she drove to Flagstaff to bail out her boyfriend, 27-year-old Charlie Malzahn, from jail.

According to Sgt. Cory Runge, police are treating the case as a homicide after finding the remains of an adult female believed to be Gorospe on Friday.

Police found the remains on a private property off of Nugget Mine Road in Mayer, Arizona, after Malzahn gave investigators “some details and directions” that helped narrow the scope of the search.

While police have not identified the cause of death, they confirmed that Gorospe was killed using a “violent method” within hours after bailing Malzahn out of jail.

Malzahn is being considered a suspect in her disappearance. He has not been charged in connection to the case.

Investigators are still working to identify the remains, but said the body matched Gorospe’s physical description and the clothing she was seen wearing the night of her disappearance.

We want to hear from you.
