A crime of opportunity or premeditation? That’s what investigators want to find out about a Circle K armed robbery.

Police said it was Sept. 13, 2017, when a man entered the store near 12th Street and Bethany Home Road around 1:30 a.m. and asked for a cup.

“He walks away from the clerk to get some water and at that moment, the door opens and our other suspect comes in,”  Phoenix Police Sgt. Jamie Rothschild said.

This guy was wearing a mask. He pointed a gun at the clerk and stole money and the clerk’s cellphone. While this was happening, the first guy went behind the counter and took several packs of cigarettes.

Investigators don’t know if this was planned or if the first guy just took advantage of the situation, but both committed crimes.

Next, this store clerk’s life was only worth $40. It was Sept. 3, 2017, when a man walked into the Dollar General at McDowell Road and 40th Avenue.

“It was Sunday afternoon, so the store was probably busy,” Phoenix Police Detective Kimberly Neis said.

The suspect walked in, went to clerk at the front counter and specifically demanded $40 or he would shoot her.

Luckily, the clerk complied and no one was hurt.

Neis said this case is unusual because “he specifically demanded a certain amount of money.”
