Pinal County jail opening veterans-only housing unit

PHOENIX — Within the next week, some low- and medium-security inmates in a Pinal County jail who are also veterans will be held in a special housing unit.
“Maybe they’ve made some mistakes, which has got them in my jail,” Sheriff Mark Lamb said. “Aside from that, they’ve still earned the right to be respected.”
The unit will house 22 inmates and will offer special resources, employment services and therapy opportunities.
Among the potential therapy programs is Battle Buddies.
“[Program workers] bring in dogs, these dogs are trained to deal with veterans and PTSD,” Lamb said, adding that the inmates can also choose to work with horses.
Housing the veterans together, Lamb said, ensures they won’t feel alone.
LiveScience said veterans face a number of problems when returning from military service or combat, including physical and psychological issues. Among them are PTSD and physical pain.
