PHOENIX — Eight high school students from Arizona were injured after their bus was involved in an accident with two semi-trucks near the California border.
According to Ofc. Joseph Medina with the California Highway Patrol, a group of Buckeye High School students were travelling to a volleyball tournament when they were involved in the accident.
Medina said the bus they were driving in stopped behind a semi-truck while driving through a construction zone in Needles, California. A different semi-truck rear-ended the bus, causing the bus to move forward and rear-end the truck in front of it.
Medina said eight students were injured in the crash. Four students were taken to local hospitals by ambulance, and one was taken by helicopter. Medina said the students were complaining about pain and did not have any visible injuries.
The driver of the bus, who has not been identified, was initially trapped in the bus when it first crashed, but Medina said they have been freed and required no medical assistance.
The I-95 near mile marker 51 will be closed in both directions for an unknown amount of time in order to complete the clean-up, Medina said.
According to the MaxPreps, the Buckeye High School boys volleyball team was supposed to play Mohave High School in Bullhead City, Arizona, at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
