Mountain Pointe teacher helping at-risk students gets KTAR News award

PHOENIX — Tragedy struck a Mountain Pointe High School teacher last year. Now that teacher is trying to make something good come out of it.
Lorie Warnock, an English teacher at the Ahwatukee high school near 44th Street and Knox Road, lost her son in October to suicide.
Her son was a student at Corona High School.
Since that tragic event, Warnock has been “on a mission to get all of Tempe Union School District’s schools on a uniform plan to deal quickly and efficiently with any student who may be at risk,” said the woman who nominated her to win KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Tribute to a Teacher Award.
“I’m really determined not to have another student or family go through the pain that we’re going through,” Warnock said.
Warnock’s nominator said her “sensibilities have been heightened to be that teacher who other kids are drawn to. Her feedback to other teachers, administrators and community members regarding her experience has been invaluable in raising awareness for suicide prevention.”
The Mountain Pointe High School teacher received a $1,000 check in her classroom. You can watch that happen in the video above.
Warnock said she is going to use the money to further awareness for suicide prevention.
