PHOENIX — A police officer and a suspect were both injured in a shooting in Phoenix on Wednesday, Phoenix police said.
Sgt. Mercedes Fortune, a Phoenix Police Department spokeswoman, said the shooting took place near 44th Street and Thomas Road around 8:30 p.m.
The unidentified suspect was injured and was transported to a local hospital. The unidentified officer is also injured with non-life threatening injuries and was also transported to a local hospital, Fortune said.
Fortune said the suspect was also bit by a police canine when officers were attempting to detain him and is in serious condition. Both the suspect and the officer remain hospitalized.
The shooting triggered a Valley-wide police pursuit, which began earlier Wednesday afternoon near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Glendale police are heading that investigation, Fortune said.
Fortune said Phoenix police officers were initially attempting to stop the suspect in his truck when he fired at them. She could not say why the officers were trying to stop the suspect.
Dozens of police vehicles were seen on television reports surrounding what looked like a bullet-ridden pickup truck. Emergency crews could also be seen putting a person in an ambulance.
There are no other outstanding suspects and the motive of the shooting is unknown, Fortune said.
The intersection at 44th Street and Thomas Road are expected to be shut down for a couple more hours as officers continue their investigation, Fortune said.
