PHOENIX — Arizona State University and Cisco are teaming up Thursday to present IT Awareness Day, a six-hour event featuring speakers, professionals and roundtable discussions for people looking to start a career in information technology.

The event takes place at ASU’s Memorial Union in Tempe from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

ASU’s Cindy Parnell, one of the organizers of the event, said the day was set up to “showcase different job opportunities and different career trajectories for people looking for information technology jobs in multiple sectors.”

She added there about 17,000 open jobs in the state in the field.

Speakers will include professionals from companies with ties to the Valley including Avnet, Honeywell, and Intel.

But, Parnell said, “We’re also making sure we highlight different organizations looking for IT workforce as well: health care, education, nonprofits, the government sector.”

Discussions will be held focusing on women in IT, entrepreneurship, and IT in small business.

The event was planned with special attention to veterans, but that it was open to everyone.

“The great part is we’ve made sure that if people can’t make it to the Tempe campus to attend, we’re live-streaming it. Our military and service members at the two Arizona bases can take in this information,” Parnell said.

Parnell pointed out the session was in preparation for a Nov. 10 hiring event she called a “massive interview day.”

ASU students serving in the military, veterans, family members of current and former military will be able to participate in looking for employment in the field of information technology.

“This is turning out to be an industry day where we’re bringing awareness to a particular industry we know is mission-critical to the state of Arizona. And we will be designing other industry days to do the same thing,” Parnell said.

We want to hear from you.
