PHOENIX — Five tons of chicken from Tyson Foods and five tons of Sara Lee bread from Bimbo Bakeries USA have been donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank with the help of Walmart.

The companies made the donations Tuesday in partnership with Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks that help feed over 46 million Americans. St. Mary’s is part of the Feeding America network.

“… when we get a 20,000-pound donation of chicken and bread, it really goes a long way for us,” St. Mary’s spokesman Jerry Brown said.

Norman Miller, an operations director for Walmart, said,” It’s just an exciting opportunity. Walmart always looks for those opportunities to be a part of the community.”

The sizable donations come at a time when the food bank is experiencing its typical summertime low food stock levels, which is punctuated by the twin hurricanes that have ravaged the South.

“Especially with all the food that we’ve been sending out recently to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, we don’t know whether or not we’ll be asked to do the same with Hurricane Irma, we’re hoping it’s not necessary,” Brown said.

“It’s part of our culture (to share) at Bimbo Bakeries,” Grant Phelps, with Bimbo Bakeries, said.
