Honor 9/11 victims at these Phoenix-area memorials, ceremonies

PHOENIX — Sixteen years ago Monday, nearly 3,000 people were killed and more than 6,000 were injured in the nationwide Sept. 11 attacks, the deadliest terrorist attacks to take place on American soil to date.
Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags on state buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset.
Arizona residents can honor the victims and first responders who risked their lives on that fateful day by visiting several memorials around the Valley or taking part in memorial ceremonies.
“Nobody forgets; you really feel it inside,” retired New York City Fire Department dispatcher Jacob Epstein, who lives in Goodyear, said. “Around the country, people thought of us for years.”
According to TripSavvy, here are some memorial ceremonies that will be held in the Phoenix metropolitan area in honor of 9/11.
• HandsOn Greater Phoenix will host a series of volunteer opportunities around the Valley for its annual 9/11 Week of Service. On Monday, the group will be taking volunteers to give veterans a home makeover.
• The City of Tempe will host the Annual Healing Field display at Tempe Beach Park on Monday, when 3,000 U.S. flags will be on display to honor the victims of 9/11. There will also be a memorial ceremony and a candlelight vigil.

For Phoenix-area residents who can’t make it to one of the ceremonies, they can pay their respects and honor the victims at the following memorials:
• 9/11 Memorial at the Gilbert Town Hall Municipal Building in Gilbert, which features a beam from one of the World Trade Center towers
• 9/11 Memorial at the Chandler Fire Department Headquarters in Chandler, which features another beam from one of the World Trade Center towers
• 9/11 Memorial at the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza near the Arizona State Capitol building in Phoenix, which is a giant, circular, steel beam
• Hall of Flame Museum in Phoenix, which in part recognizes firefighters who died responding to the 9/11 attacks
