PHOENIX — Arizona is “likely” to receive a group of 200 prisoners after they’re moved from their current incarceration facility in Nevada, according to a report.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote Wednesday that Southern Desert Correctional Center in Nevada will likely move 200 inmates to a CoreCivic facility (or facilities) in Arizona. CoreCivic is a private correctional facilities corporation and has seven locations in Arizona.
The Review-Journal stated in its article that the move could come because Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval received approval to ship inmates out of state to relieve overcrowding and allow maintenance on the soon-to-be-vacant cells.
The approval included funding to finalize a contract between CoreCivic and the state of Nevada.
