PHOENIX — Did your Friday morning commute seem a little light? Maybe the office was a little more empty than usual?

According to an online poll conducted by Triple-A of Arizona, that was likely because people had skipped town for Labor Day weekend. The motor club said about 64 percent of Arizonans planned to take a vacation this weekend.

About three-quarters of those planning a trip said they would stay in Arizona.

The state department of transportation said no highways would be closed for construction over the holiday weekend. Speed limits would be lowered on Interstate 17 and State Route 87 north of the Phoenix area along with Interstate 10 south of Phoenix to try and reduce crashes.

About 70 percent of respondents said spending time outdoors was at the top of their Labor Day to-do list. Those in Phoenix should prepare for highs near 105 all weekend, while highs in Flagstaff were expected to be about 80 degrees.

Triple-A said it would once again offer its Tipsy Tow Service from 6 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The program provides a free 10-mile ride home to a driver who has had too much to drink and tows their car as well, so there’s no headache about getting the car the next day.

“If you’ll be celebrating the last long weekend of summer by consuming alcohol, make sure you have a safe ride home,” agency spokeswoman Michelle Donait said. “If those plans fall through, call AAA for a Tipsy Tow and we’ll get you home safely.”

Trips over 10 miles were subject to standard tow rates.
