PHOENIX — A busy airport does not necessarily mean flights will be delayed. At least, that’s not the case if you’re flying in or out of Sky Harbor International Airport.
A report from Reward Expert found that while the Phoenix airport is the eighth-busiest with an average of 3,503 flights over Labor Day weekend, it’s also one of the most reliable. Sky Harbor ranked fourth-best in the study with 88.5 percent of the flights being on time.
Only flying out of Honolulu, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis-Saint Paul are more efficient, according to the study.
Phoenix’s hub ranks just ahead of airports in Charlotte, Seattle-Tacoma, Dallas/Forth Worth and Atlanta; the Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta is also the busiest with an average of 8,194 flights over Labor Day weekend.
How can travelers avoid the crowds over the holiday weekend?
Traveling the Wednesday or Thursday before the weekend provides the most likelihood of a flight being on time. The Friday heading into the weekend and the Tuesday after it offer the highest likelihood of delays.
Reward Expert recommends flying during the weekend. Saturday, Sunday and Monday see the fewest numbers of delayed flights before airports get crowded again on Tuesday and Wednesday.
