PHOENIX — Popular local Mexican food chain Macayo’s will be shutting down its Scottsdale site before the end of the month, according to a report.

The restaurant at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard will serve its last meals Aug. 19, the Phoenix Business Journal wrote Monday. Another Scottsdale location had already closed.

A spokeswoman for the restaurant told the Business Journal the company’s lease was up soon and combined with plans to open a new spot — Woody’s Macayo in central Phoenix — decided it was time to move on.

The new Macayo’s will be down the street from the now-closed original on Central Avenue near Indian School Road. It takes over a spot that had been occupied by Fez.

Woody Johnson and his wife Victoria opened the much-loved Central Avenue location in 1952. The iconic design (resembling a Mayan temple) and signage were scheduled to come down to make way for apartments.

“The new Central Macayo’s location will offer a fun, indoor-outdoor environment, including an outside patio, making an amazing contribution to the Central Avenue skyline, while still maintaining the same exciting Macayo’s atmosphere guests have loved over the years,” company spokeswoman Ashley Negron said in 2016.

After the new site is open, the family will still be running nine eateries in Arizona and two in Nevada.

There are seven Macayo’s in the Valley, including southeast Phoenix, west Phoenix, Mesa and Goodyear.

The chain celebrated its 70th anniversary last year.
