One woman has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition and another was questioned by police after a road-rage shooting in suburban Phoenix.
Police in Glendale said the suspect in Wednesday evening’s shooting near 59th Avenue and Bell Road had cooperated with authorities. She told them she had been in a headlock and felt she needed to protect herself.
Sgt. Scott Waite said the injured woman suffered a single gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital. She was expected to recover.
Police said the 5 o’clock confrontation began near 67th and Olive avenues when one of the cars cut off the other.
Once the cars had stopped, the drivers began physically fighting. When one of the drivers put the other in a headlock, the woman in the viselike grip warned that she had a gun, and after she wasn’t released, eventually pulled the trigger.
A third woman who was a passenger in the suspect’s car was also attacked but her injuries were minor.
Waite said both women could face charges but no arrests were made.
“We just want to make sure we get all the facts behind it,” he said.
Names of the women have not been released.
