PHOENIX — Two teenagers and were killed Tuesday evening when a semi-truck carrying a load of lumber ran a red light and smashed into cars on State Route 87 north of Mesa.
Authorities said a 15-year-old boy died at the scene in Fountain Hills and a 14-year-old girl died at a hospital.
Five other people were injured in the multiple-vehicle wreck that shut down north lanes at Gilbert Road and south lanes at Shea Boulevard.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said preliminary information indicated the big rig collided with three other vehicles
and spilled its load. The lumber hit another vehicle.
The road was closed for hours, reopening around 4 a.m.
