PHOENIX — Rep. Jesus Rubalcava (D-Gila Bend) has resigned from Arizona’s state House of Representatives in the wake of alleged problems with his campaign accounting practices.
The freshman Democrat has been under investigation for problems with his campaign-accounting practices, allegedly mixing campaign money with personal money and unable to account for $9,200 in expenditures not clearly tied to his campaign.
The Citizens Clean Elections Campaign found evidence of those issues, and Rubalcava told commissioners he agreed with their findings.
According to Rubalcava’s biography on the state legislature’s website, he was originally elected to serve on the governing board of a school district at the age of 18. He later served on Gila Bend’s town council. Rubalcava became a member of the state House this year.
Rubalcava came under fire previously for a comment he made on Facebook, wherein he said he wanted to punch Sen. Debbie Lesko, the Republican sponsor of a school voucher bill, in the throat. He later apologized.
