PHOENIX — New Arizona driver’s license manuals will include a special section on how people should interact with law enforcement.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, created the language. The Motor Vehicle Division incorporated it.
“It was our pleasure, at the MVD, to be of service to the people and to law enforcement to help get the information out,” Doug Nick, a spokesman for the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division, said.
The new section included several pointers, such as what drivers should do when a law enforcement vehicle pulls up behind them with the lights on: The driver should pull over, but should do so in a safe spot. The officer may direct the driver to go elsewhere.
After they are stopped, drivers and passengers alike should keep their seat belts fastened, keep their hands visible and avoid reaching around inside the car.
Drivers may also want to consider rolling down windows to help the officer see inside or turn on the interior light if it’s dark outside.
Drivers who do not cooperate with police demands are subject to arrest.
