Surprise, Peoria hit hard as thunderstorms arrive in Valley

Jul 15, 2017, 5:54 PM | Updated: 7:30 pm

PHOENIX — Thunderstorms made their way towards the Valley Saturday afternoon, with the strongest of them hitting the northwest areas in Surprise and Peoria.

The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Maricopa County Saturday afternoon for over two hours and the storms continued later into the night.

A flash flood warning was also posted for the county from 6:13 p.m. to 9:43 p.m. and dust storm warnings came as well.

At one point, APS’ outage map in several parts of the Valley had over 3,500 in Sun City and more than 4,000 near downtown Phoenix.

The portion of the storm that was the roughest as of early Saturday night was in Surprise and Peoria, where images of the conditions began to flood in on social media.

The rain approached northern parts of Phoenix and made its way through the Valley in the night.

The storms also hit Lake Pleasant.

Monsoon storms were expected to begin in early July after a hot summer thus far in Arizona. Some of those storms began earlier in the week when multiple thunderstorm warnings hit the Valley Wednesday.
