PHOENIX — Valley Metro is looking for artists to come up with artwork for its upcoming light rail extension in south Phoenix.

Artists will be tasked with designing and creating artwork that will be incorporated along the South Central light rail extension, which will connect the current light rail system in downtown Phoenix and run south to Baseline Road. The extension is scheduled to be ready by 2023.

“It’s an opportunity for artists to partner with the local community, project design team and, of course, the construction contractor to really showcase the rich history and culture of the south Phoenix neighborhoods through public art,” said Valley Metro spokeswoman Corinne Holliday.

Artists have until July 19 to submit a proposal. Holliday said they’re looking for both experienced and emerging artists.

Two workshops for artists who are thinking about applying will be held July 13 and July 17 at the Luna Culture Lab in Phoenix. Valley Metro staff will be there to assist with and answer questions about the submission process.

Holliday said members of the Stakeholder Art Review Committee, which is made up of people who work and live along the South Central light rail extension, will play a role in selecting the artists and giving input as the artwork is developed.

She added that art has been “an important element to the success of the entire light rail system” since its inception in 2008.

“Each station does have its own unique character with artwork that really strives to add to the transit experience and reflect the neighboring communities,” Holliday said.

More information about the submission process can be found at the Valley Metro website.
