Eyes on Parenting: Tie down your furniture to prevent injuries to kids

Jul 11, 2017, 7:09 AM

Amazon prime day means lots of new stuff that parents need to tie down.

“My kids are climbers, so they like to get on top of things,” said Dr. Cara Christ, Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services. “The additional weight of a child on a dresser or a cabinet can actually cause it to fall, which can fall on them and severely injure them.”

It’s not only important to tie down furniture, but Christ said freestanding TVs or those that are perched on top of something need to be tied down as well.

Securing heavy stuff should be part of every parent’s routine when getting the home ready for babies and/or toddlers.

“It’s always a good practice to make sure you make sure that you’re securing your furniture as part of your baby-proofing of your home,” Christ said.  “Also looking at uncovered electrical plugs, [and] cabinets that they can get into.”
