PHOENIX — Tucson has been named one of the best cities in the United States when it comes to recreation, a popular financial website said.
WalletHub said the southern Arizona city was the seventh overall best place when it came to enjoying oneself, be it indoors or out.
Two Valley cities — Scottsdale and Phoenix — were in the top 25.
Tucson fared very well on the website’s recreation cost factor, coming it at ninth. That category included park spending per capita, average fitness club fees and average massage fees.
If that sounded a bit dull, keep in mind that same category also included movie and bowling costs, average food price and average alcoholic beverage cost.
Tucson took a hit on the site’s quality of parks and the entertainment and recreational facilities rankings.
Phoenix tied with Mesa for the highest bowling costs in the country, but tied for the fifth-lowest movie costs. Mesa came in at 50th overall.
Gilbert was lowest-ranked Arizona city on the list at 93rd overall. However, the city took its ranking in stride.
“From the farmer’s market to the special events that parks and recreation offers, here in Gilbert we’ve got plenty to do and we’re proud of the recreation offerings that we have here,” city spokeswoman Jennifer Alvarez said.
