PHOENIX — A project that will eventually help ease some of the traffic in the Phoenix area is going to temporarily slow it down this weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that bridge work for the South Mountain Freeway project is going to close part of Interstate 10 starting Friday.

Westbound I-10 at 59th Avenue will be closed starting June 23 at 10 p.m. through Monday, June 26, at 5 a.m.

This is the first of two planned closures in the area, as another one is scheduled for July 7-10.

ADOT expects there to be heavy traffic and delays, with traffic being detoured to the off- and on-ramps at 59th Avenue.

ADOT said these closures are needed to set steel beams to temporarily support the concrete structure, also known as the straddle bent, for the future connection between the South Mountain Freeway and I-10.
