PHOENIX — The Arizona chapter of the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation will shut down at the end of next month, the organization announced Wednesday.

In a joint letter posted on the chapter’s website, Christina Mencuccini, the chapter’s executive director, and Jill Bray, the president of the chapter’s board of directors, said operations would cease on July 31.

“It is with a heavy heart but an uplifting feeling of accomplishment thanks to your commitment that the directors of the Susan G. Komen Arizona Affiliate bids you farewell and extends a sincere thank you,” the letter read.

The letter said the decision to close the 24-year-old chapter was made because of several factors.

“Closing Komen Arizona was a difficult decision, but was based on financial challenges and current downward trends in overall fundraising and event participation which limited our ability to continue to fulfill our mission locally,” the letter said.

Grantees will continue to receive money through July 31.

Arizona residents who were working with the foundation can contact the national help line at 877-GO-KOMEN or online.

The Phoenix Race for the Cure, scheduled for October, was canceled. All registration checks and fees will be refunded.

The Arizona chapter was one of more than 100 Komen affiliates nationwide.

We want to hear from you.
