PHOENIX — One of the largest wildfires of the season in Arizona has grown even larger, but is becoming more contained by the day.

The Highline Fire near Payson has consumed over 6,000 acres as of Sunday morning, according to the Highline Fire Info Facebook page.

Personnel are making quick work to contain the fire, however, as it is now 60 percent contained. The wildfire was just 5 percent contained three days ago.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown, and it is being controlled by 1,243 personnel.

“Firelines will be tested but are expected to withstand the winds expected tonight and in the early morning hours,” the Incident Information System said.

The wildfire forced its first evacuations on Thursday. At about 2 p.m. Sunday, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office lifted all evacuations.

The Highline Fire merged with the Bear Fire, so reports are combined totals of the two.

Payson is about 70 miles south of Flagstaff.
