Wrong-way driver on US 60 arrested after striking five different vehicles

PHOENIX — A wrong-way driver on the westbound U.S. 60 hit five different vehicles before being stopped and arrested, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
A trooper patrolling the area Monday night heard the broadcast given to troopers after several calls from DPS 911 calls and saw the vehicle. The trooper turned on his emergency lights and siren to pull the car over but the trooper was not successful.
A Mesa police helicopter responded to the call and located the driver who was driving at “freeway speeds” in the HOV lane.
After traveling about five miles in the wrong direction, the wrong-way driver was stopped near Val Vista Road and arrested.
The driver was charged with five counts of hit and run and nine counts of endangerment. Additional charges may be forthcoming and impairment was thought to have played a role in the incident.
Five total vehicles were struck by the driver.
No troopers were hurt in the incident.
