PHOENIX — It’s that time of year again: Daytime temperatures are in the triple digits and the Arizona sun beats the pavement and heads like a hammer.

There is relief, though.

The city of Phoenix’s hydration and cooling stations have officially opened. The We’re Cool – Heat Relief Network spots offer free water and a place to cool off. They’ll be open for the next five months.

“Phoenix is taking the lead on reaching out to adults on fixed incomes, those experiencing homelessness and others at risk during our hottest months so they know where they can get help,” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said.

“The We’re Cool campaign is powered by dedicated volunteers working to connect residents in need to heat relief-resources like hydration and cooling stations.”

Phoenix Human Services Department spokesman Riann Balch said the hydration stations are designed to give people a badly-needed break from the heat.

“There’s not, sometimes, a really big difference between the heat of the day and the temperature at night,” he said. “You really have to give your body an opportunity to cool down.”

Balch said anyone in need can use these stations. There is no questionnaire to complete or income qualifiers.
