PHOENIX — A Mesa city councilman who was arrested for driving under the influence earlier this month had a blood alcohol content of .220, according to the Tempe Police Department.

Ryan Winkle, a councilman representing District 3 in Mesa, was arrested around 1 a.m. on May 8 after he was seen swerving near Baseline and Mill roads in Tempe.

Winkle showed signs and symptoms “consistent with impairment” during the stop, including bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, said Det. Lily Duran, a spokeswoman with the Tempe Police Department.

Winkle told police he was not drinking and agreed to take a field sobriety test. Based off his performance, he was soon transported to a DUI task force post.

Police issued Winkle a criminal citation for DUI and was released shortly after.

Winkle announced on May 17 that he would take a voluntary leave of absence to deal with the legal matters of his arrest.

Duran said Mesa city prosecutor John Belatti will follow up on “possible additional charges.”
