PHOENIX — Attorney Juan Martinez, the prosecutor who wound up in the national spotlight during the Jodi Arias trial, reportedly may try the Serial Street Shooter case.
The Arizona Republic reported Tuesday that court documents listed Martinez as the prosecutor of record for a hearing in the serial shootings case scheduled for later this week.
However, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office did not immediately confirm to the paper if Martinez is simply presenting the county argument in the hearing or if he will actually try the case.
Martinez garnered national attention — and raised eyebrows — both during and after the Arias trial. He became such a celebrity that fans were seen asking Martinez for autographs and pictures outside of the courthouse.
Despite Martinez signing the autograph, KTAR Legal Analyst Monica Lindstrom said at the time he was not guilty of misconduct.
“I didn’t think this was misconduct at all because it’s not like he’s standing outside the courthouse flagging people down saying, ‘Hey, $5 and you can have my autograph,’” said Lindstrom, adding that, if he knew jurors were present, it would have been a different story.
However, Martinez was later investigated by the Arizona Bar Association because he was writing a book about the Arias trial. The ethics complaint was dropped.
Arias was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
Aaron Juan Saucedo, the suspect in the Serial Street Shooter case, has been charged with eight counts of first-degree murder among a myriad of other charges.
